The term derives from French expression “banni?re” and past due Latin bandum, a towel out which a flag is manufactured (Latin: banderia, Italian: bandiera, Portuguese: bandeira, Spanish: bandera). The German words developed the term to mean the official edict or proclamation and since such written purchases often prohibited some type of real human activity, bandum assumed this is of an ban, control, interdict or excommunication.
